ST BEDE’S COLLEGE ARTS & TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
This project featured the refurbishment and addition to the existing Arts, Computer and Technology Building at St Bede’s College in Mentone. The original building was built in 1977 for Art and Drama teaching, with the Technology areas added in 1997. Both parts of the building were worn out and inefficient in use of space; a contemporary facility that supports staff and students today and into the future was required.

Reconfiguring for contemporary curriculum
The school provided a technical brief, outlining the number and function of rooms to be provided, along with specific equipment requirements. Minor reconfiguration was applied to the existing plan layout to suit the school’s brief and teaching criteria. In addition, solid walls were replaced with full height glazed walls and new curved walls were added to reduce the formality of the learning spaces.
Project based learning
The planning approach provides practical working studios linked to a variety of design studios and gallery spaces. Direct and visible access to staff members and break spaces support the workshops and learning studios. While the activities undertaken require specific and dedicated mechanical, electrical and safety design requirements, the philosophy of the design remains consistent with other learning spaces. The aim is to provide flexible and adaptable learning spaces enabling project based learning and enquiry.
