Regional context
Henderson College is located in Irymple, about 3km from the centre of Mildura. The campus is approximately 8 hectares and is relatively flat across the entire site. The surrounding landscape is currently rural land consisting of residential farms and vineyards. The projects undertaken to date adopt simple building forms for ease of construction, to minimise material wastage, and to be adaptable to future changes. Both externally and internally, all new buildings feature the use of readily available materials with low environmental impact balanced with longevity and ease of maintenance.
Connection to outdoor spaces
The climate of the Mildura region enables the use of outdoor spaces for learning throughout most of the school year. Summer heat requires careful placement of windows and the inclusion of shaded verandah spaces. Flexible learning spaces in many buildings open directly onto the shared central courtyard, a passive gathering space for the whole school. The Food Technology Studio connect visually and physically to the extensive produce garden.
