MERNDA HILLS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE GYMNASIUM
The new gymnasium at Mernda Hills Christian College is a key stage in the delivery of the campus masterplan conceived by KDA. Beyond its functional purpose, the gym was seen as an opportunity to set a bold new direction in the architectural identity of the campus.
A welcoming presence
The gym’s sculptural presence was accentuated to create a new campus landmark. This was achieved with an unexpected bullnosed skillion roof and verandahs that provide a soft counterpoint to the harsh, shed-like form of a typical school gym. The curved design language continues internally with coved wall-to-ceiling transitions and reappears in the smallest details, such as in the corners of benchtops and flooring transitions.
The materiality is honest, tactile, and hardwearing with minimal applied finishes. The monochromatic exterior of corrugated metal, brick, prefinished fibre cement and honed blockwork gives way to an interior of warm timber and woodwool panelling, relieved by the occasional pop of colour that doubles as a wayfinding element.
