Visual identity
Towering over its lower-scaled surrounds, the multipurpose hall makes a striking first impression. The exterior is dominated by two faceted façades clad in fibre cement sheet painted dark grey and the school’s signature blue—the larger looking outward to the street and the smaller facing inward to the neighbouring science building. Together, the sculptural façades create a contemporary yet inviting visual identity for the campus.
Multi-purpose use
An intimate entrance foyer leads into the main courts area, where a soaring acoustic ceiling and discreetly recessed lighting imbue the space with a dignity rarely found in gyms. Clad in hardwearing MDF and ply panels, the modest materiality and robust detailing of the courts area anticipate a lifetime of wear and tear without sacrificing aesthetics. The faceted gesture on the exterior façades are echoed within with graphic slashes of colour on the timber cladding.
The courts area is made flexible by retractable and demountable sports equipment, allowing the space to quickly transform from a gym to events space for functions and school assemblies. Electronically controlled louvre windows and expanses of translucent cladding let an abundance of fresh air and light into the space, while roof mounted hybrid exhaust fans allow stack ventilation to occur with minimal power consumption, enabling the courts area to be entirely naturally ventilated.
