Siting and access
Macleay Park is the home of multiple ovals used for a variety of sports and sporting clubs. The netball pavilion is located in the netball precinct, adjacent to the eight outdoor netball courts. Though small, the strong graphics and soaring roof gives the pavilion a presence and allows it to act as a land mark and signifier of use.
The main sporting pavilion is located between the two main ovals which are used predominately for cricket and football. The choice of this location gave connection to the park’s vehicle access track as well as giving both ovals direct connection to the pavilion. The building is designed to have covered viewing decks from both sides with dual access to the central social space and kitchen facility.
Functionality
Public sporting facilities need to be constructed to stand up to the rigors of use. Materials were chosen with cost and durability at the forefront. The concrete block used in the main pavilion was chosen for its robust nature and also for the variety of finishes - the textured face has been used for the exterior discouraging graffiti, and smooth face internally to the change rooms eliminating the need for additional wall lining. The roofing product was chosen for the efficiency in structural design and pre-finish reducing the need for ongoing maintenance.
