Campus continuity
In a similar layout to the Stage 2 Home Economics building, the Arts and Technology building at Henderson College is characterised by a boomerang shaped plan and curved walls. It follows the site planning of the previous stage to embrace the inner courtyard for student gatherings and outdoor activities, whilst offering outward views along the learning studio face of the building. The design adopts a simple building form for ease of construction, to minimise material wastage, and to be adaptable to future changes. Both externally and internally, the building repeats the use of simple materials with low environmental impact, balanced with longevity and ease of maintenance.
Designing for technical tasks
Kneeler Design Architect’s approach to the design of art and technology spaces is to provide a stimulating learning environment in line with contemporary teaching, with flexibility for future growth in the curriculum. While the activities undertaken require specific and dedicated mechanical, electrical and safety design requirements, the philosophy of the design remains consistent with other learning spaces. The spaces should be a comfortable, functional, yet inspiring, working environment for the occupants. Natural light and ventilation, careful consideration to acoustic treatment and provision of specific services appropriate to technical needs are all deemed to be an important part of the design. Consideration to the durability and safety of floor surfaces is considered and occupational health and safety plays a role in the design process.
