DE LA SALLE BROTHERS’ RESIDENCE
Accommodation for the retired brothers of the De La Salle order has always been provided in a 1970s double brick block of apartments, adjacent to St Bede’s College in Mentone. The relationship between the school and the brothers is one of mutual benefit. The brothers often have active roles as mentors and guides in the college, whilst the active environment of the school lends a sense of vitality to the brothers’ residence.

Rejuvenation
The existing accommodation was small, dark and dank. The building’s plumbing and electrical wiring was in desperate need of an upgrade, and the flat bitumen roof was leaking and required urgent attention.
The scope of the renovation was vast and comprehensive. The existing double storey structure was gutted, the floor area was nearly doubled, and a new secure car parking area was provided in an undercroft section.
A modest lift provides access to all three levels of the complex. The floor area of each unit was doubled, and each bathroom was renovated to meet new accessibility guidelines for aged care facilities.
Modernisation
Natural daylight was increased by making windows bigger and providing balconies that look over the College Oval and Beaumaris Bay beyond.
The chapel on the ground floor was also modernised to include a small sacristy.
Particular care was taken in selecting materials and surfaces that were clean and bright, yet warm and homely. Scope Victoria was engaged to provide invaluable advice on Work Health and Safety aspects of the project.
The Mentone residence is a popular choice, as the facility is now full to capacity.
