Publications

From 2007 to 2018, Kneeler Design Architects undertook the annual publication of ten books on behalf of the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE, formerly CEFPI) awards programme. Titled Places for Learning – Contemporary Designs in Education, the books showcase twelve years of the best contemporary education facilities through the lens of the awards programme within a total of 898 pages of content, and represent a cumulative 1,640 hours of writing, compiling and editing. Seventy-five different firms have contributed to the 441 projects featured, bringing enormous diversity to the reading matter and approach.

In addition to highlighting outstanding projects, these publications provide a record of emerging and sustained trends within education facility planning, and a comprehensive reference through which the education community can become aware of the creative diversity of building solutions possible for different learning environments. The publications also encourage cross pollination within the architecture, design and teaching professions, whereby architects may be inspired by the buildings presented by their colleagues and be informed by the teachers and students using those buildings on a daily basis.

In 2012, 2013, and 2019, the Places for Learning publications were awarded Best Innovative Education Initiative at the Outstanding Learning Environments Awards, presented by the A4LE Victorian/Tasmanian and Australasian chapters.
